Gerald W. Barney is the Managing Partner and founder of American ValueMetrics Corporation, and the author of Street-Smart Guide to Valuing Business Investments. In addition to his executive responsibilities, Mr. Barney reviews and supervises valuations of our analyst team. For more than 40 years he has prepared opinions of value related to debt and equity securities, business enterprises and intangible assets for tax and financial reporting purposes. As an appraiser, Mr. Barney has performed valuations of over 10,000 business entities, intellectual property and/or equipment assignments throughout the spectrum of industries, from start-ups to billion dollar companies.
As a respected industry leader, Mr. Barney introduced the application of heuristics to the task of business valuation, which is detailed in his book. Heuristics is the art of drawing inferences from limited, incomplete or fuzzy data. It is based upon the innate human ability to recognize patterns.”, he says in Street-Smart.

Mr. Barney began his career as a financial professional in 1971 as an NYSE, ASE, and NASD licensed securities broker with the regional firm Mitchum, Jones & Templeton dealing in mid-sized mergers and acquisitions and commercial real estate syndications. Since 1983 he has been active principally in providing financial services in business valuations, machinery and equipment appraisals, consulting, business brokerage and financing.

Mr. Barney is a member of the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA) and holds the designations Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) and Master Analyst Financial Forensics (MAFF). He is a member of the National Equipment & Business Brokers Institute (NEBB) and holds the professional designations of CMEA (Certified Machinery & Equipment Appraiser). He is also a member of the International Society of Business Analysts and holds the designation as a CSBA (Certified Senior Business Analyst).

Mr. Barney holds an MS in Cybernetic Systems, a BA in Management and an AA in Engineering. He is a formerly licensed NASD (now FINRA) securities broker, and a licensed California real estate broker.
